A prediabetes or type 2 diabetes diagnosis often comes with a list of foods to avoid and very little help with what to eat instead. Many people leave the appointment unsure what belongs on their plate, and a little afraid of food. Working one-on-one with a registered dietitian replaces that uncertainty with a practical plan built around your meals, your schedule and your lab results.
What we work on together
Your first session covers your health history, recent lab work, any medications, and how you actually eat on a typical day. From there, we focus on the changes that matter most for your blood sugar:
- Balanced plates that pair carbohydrates with protein, fiber and healthy fats, so meals are satisfying and blood sugar rises more gradually
- Carbohydrate foods that give you steady energy, rather than cutting carbs out entirely
- A consistent meal rhythm, because long gaps between meals often lead to overeating later in the day
- Reading nutrition labels quickly, without turning every meal into math
- Plans for restaurants, travel, holidays and the busy weeks that used to derail you
Prediabetes is a chance to change course
Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range. It's a signal worth taking seriously, and also an opportunity: modest, sustainable changes to how you eat, move and sleep can make a real difference. We help you choose the few changes that will matter most for you and turn them into habits you can keep, rather than a strict diet you'll abandon in a month.
Living well with type 2 diabetes
If you've lived with type 2 diabetes for years, you may already know the rules and still find them hard to follow. We look at what's getting in the way, whether that's evening snacking, skipped meals, stress or simply not knowing what to cook, and build a plan that works with your real life. The goal is steadier numbers and more confidence around food, not perfection.
Coordinated with your physician
Nutrition is one part of your diabetes care. With your permission, we coordinate with your doctor so our recommendations complement your medication and treatment plan, and we use your lab results, such as A1C, to guide the plan and see how things change over time.

Virtual or in person
Sessions happen by video call from anywhere in Virginia, or in person in the Roanoke Valley and the greater Richmond area. Many clients find virtual sessions make it easier to stay consistent: there's no drive, and you can look at your own pantry and food labels together with your dietitian.
